For several years now, RE2020 has established itself as a key benchmark in the construction sector. But what does this acronym really stand for?
Who does this regulation apply to? And above all, what are the concrete implications for plumbers and sanitary installers?

What is RE2020?

RE2020 (Environmental Regulation 2020) is the regulation currently in force for new buildings in France.
It replaced RT2012 with a clear objective: to reduce the environmental impact of buildings throughout their entire life cycle.

Unlike previous regulations that focused solely on energy consumption, RE2020 goes further by integrating:

  • energy performance,

  • the building’s carbon footprint,

  • summer comfort in response to heatwaves.

It is therefore no longer just about heating, but about a global approach to building design.

What are the main objectives of RE2020?

1. Reducing energy consumption

Buildings must consume less energy, in particular through:

  • improved insulation,

  • more efficient equipment,

  • optimised systems for domestic hot water production and management.

    2. Reducing the carbon footprint

RE2020 takes into account the entire life cycle of the building:

    • material manufacturing,

    • transport,

    • installation,

    • use,

    • end of life.

Products and equipment with a low carbon impact are therefore encouraged.

    3. Improving summer comfort

The aim is to limit the use of air conditioning by designing buildings that remain comfortable during periods of high temperatures (orientation, ventilation, suitable equipment).

    Who is affected by RE2020?

RE2020 applies to all stakeholders involved in new construction projects: single-family homes, multi-family housing, and tertiary buildings (offices, schools, etc.).

Are plumbers and sanitary installers concerned?

Yes. Even though RE2020 does not directly target tradespeople, the installed equipment must comply with the project’s requirements, including:

    • choice of domestic hot water production systems,

    • equipment performance and durability,

    • consideration of the environmental impact of products,

    • quality of installation.

Plumbers and sanitary installers therefore play a key role in the overall compliance of the building.

In summary, RE2020 translates concretely into:

    • a more rigorous selection of products (durability, performance, materials),

    • increased attention to airtightness and installation quality,

    • stricter requirements for domestic hot water systems,

    • closer collaboration between design offices, project managers and installers.
